Emperor's Guard Station Courtyard Hotel

This place comes with 24 hour check in which was handy for us as our flights were delayed by 6 hours and we arrived at 5am. Our manager knew some English and was extremely helpful in helping us book a taxi and get us familiarised with the area. The space was clean and comfortable. Toilet paper should not be flushed! They gave us free toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as shampoo and body soap, and toilet paper. Beds are comfortable, although if you like soft beds you might not find it comfortable. Bottled water and laundry service is free. Wifi is very fast. Also has a heater and AC. The hotel is also very good at blocking the general traffic ambience down the street, so it doesn’t feel like you’re near a main road. You can still hear guests in other rooms and neighbours if they are being a little noisy though. This didn't happen often though and usually during waking hours. Of course, the courtyard itself is a very nice place to sit and relax underneath the grapes and lanterns. The location is very good with all kinds of shops within walking distance. You can walk to the Palace museum in about 45 minutes. A pharmacy is located with 100m which was handy as we developed a cold just before the trip. Highly recommended. Visited in August 2012, but TripAdvisor did not let me put it there. We first searched for the hotel for a good 20 minutes. After having found it though, we realized it was worth the effort. The host was very friendly and spoke fluent English. He gave us a map and sat down with us, marking out all the important places and answering the questions we had. The room was small but clean, though it was hard for me to get used to the bed as my feet dangled over the edge. The local area was lively and we had breakfast bought from stands and vendors on nearby street corners - tasty, authentic cuisine (the dumplings were 1-2 yuan when we visited). Overall a great experience, would definitely reccommend.
