Wonderful hotel just outside Shanghai
I stayed in the meidu for a week over the Chinese new and spring festival. This meant that the hotel had less staff than normal but this seemed to have no effect on the service in the hotel. The staff were always very friendly and help when ever they could and the were clean and well maintained. My room was well decorated and the bathroom had a fantastic shower. The restaurant is set out in the traditional style with separate dinning rooms which are very comfortable. The food is also traditional Chinese in the local shanghai style and is very good. Over all this is a great hotel with very helpful staff.

Value for Money for April 2012 stay
Stayed here in April 2012,choose hotel cause a pal had stayed and liked the atmosphere.I got an awesome deal for $65 for 4days on booking.com site. First I contacted the hotel and was able to arrange airport pickup from Pudong airport ( very helpful cause my flight was delayed and got in almost 11pm for my first visit to Shanghai). That cost about 180 renmbi ($30) and took close to an hour in no traffic. Hotel is off the tourist area ,in a suburb with actual Chinese folks living there. Hotel main lobby was under renovation at time.Check in was...speedy! Room was clean and cleaned daily. Taxis can be gotten outside hotel or on request from the staff. some of the taxis are quite decrepit but clean. Beware of the popular trick of taxi drivers trying to hide the meter before journey start! And find out if there's a service charge from hotel some of the drivers charged that some didn't I think its a scam on foreigners though. The only sour point is the location of the hotel from the sights. The closest subway station is about 20-30mins away( ask for the Dongchuan Road, jinping Rd or Huaning Rd subway and not Xinzchuang which is bigger but further) cost is about 30-40 renmbi ($5-6) per metered drop. If you think rush hour in London tube or NYC subway was tough, wait till you see Chinese rush hour! haha . I wasn't able to try the hotel breakfast ( which came free with room) or their foot massage.I was gone early in the morning back late in the night! The staff were mostly helpful despite the language barrier. There was always someone for them to consult who could speak English so wasn't so much of a problem. Cable was mostly in Chinese with some English films that were subtitled in Chinese thank gawd. The internet was dial-up speed which is common throughout China. The surrounding area have lotsa eating places, shops for all price ranges, even a mall and IMAX theatre close by in the neighbourhood.Beware cold drinks are a premimum in China, lotsa place only offer cold drinks on request! All in all a very worthwhile place for the budget conscious seasoned traveller or group.. …

Brilliant Hotel! Brilliant City! 5/5
I have recently stayed in the Meidu Hotel in Shanghai having never been to China, or indeed Asia, before. I was not entirely sure of what to expect but i was pleasantly surprised from the moment i stepped into the lobby. I had a luxury twin room which costs about 680 RMB (£68 approx) per night or 400 RMB (£40 approx) per night off season which for Shanghai is extremely reasonable. The room was very comfortable, beautifully decorated, always well cleaned and IPTV was provided (note: all tv menus are in Mandarin but it is possible to find English language programming). Breakfast, to the western pallet, was a little odd consisting of congee (rice porridge with various optional extra flavourings), boiled eggs and steamed buns but trust me you get used to it pretty quickly and i found i enjoyed the new tastes i was experiencing. The lunch time and evening food is exceptional, you can book a private dining room for you and your party to dine in peace and there is a wide selection of different foods to suit most tastes, all the dishes are designed to be shared and placed in the centre of the table on a lazy susan. While the hotel does not have a swimming pool it does have a chinese spa which offers a range relaxing treatments. The hotel staff are friendly and many of them are able to speak limited English. The hotels location, outside of the downtown area of Shanghai may put some potential western travellers off but as the area is well served with transport options this not a problem. Overall i really enjoyed my stay in this hotel and my time in Shanghai and i would highly recommend both to anyone visiting China either for the first time or returning. …
